Welcome to the
Department of English and Philosophy. With
the explosion of interest in questions
about gender and race contributing to the
traditional questions of literature and
of philosophy these are exciting times
in the Humanities. The Department is justifiably
proud of its very strong traditional programs
in English and
in Philosophy.
However, we realize that one size does
not fit all.
In addition to the standard B.A., we are
putting a program in place where you can
get a degree in English with a concentration
in Creative Writing or
Folk Life Studies or
Minority Literary Studies among
others. Or if you are committed to another
major
we have minors in English, Philosophy,
Folklore, Religious Studies, and Women
and Gender which might benefit your major.
And we know that college is a time for
fun, and that you can learn a lot outside
of the classroom. The department sponsors
club and a student published literary
magazine. Department faculty members edit
two nationally known journals, and the
department sponsors a Delta Blues Symposium
each Spring. Junior and senior as well
as graduate students have the opportunity
to help with these department programs.

the cutting edge of the University!
