Changing
Majors Without Delaying Graduation
Requirements
The philosophy major
has more free electives and is more flexible
than any other major on campus. The large
number of free electives makes it possible
to change to a philosophy major late
in your college career without delaying
your expected graduation date.
Philosophy as a Pre-Law
Major
A degree in philosophy
is widely recognized as a valuable pre-
professional degree for those interested
in attending law school. National results
show that philosophy majors score higher
on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
than do majors from any other area of
the Liberal Arts. Recent ASU philosophy
graduates have been accepted in law school
at Baylor, Missouri, Southern Methodist,
Pepperdine, Arkansas, Arkansas at Little
Rock, Washington University, and Memphis
State among others.
Careers in College
Teaching
Many of those who
major in philosophy do so in order to
pursue a graduate degree and teach on
the university or community college level.
There are current studies which suggest
there will be an increasing demand for
college faculty over the next five to
ten years as large numbers of current
faculty reach retirement age. ASU philosophy
graduates have been accepted into philosophy
graduate programs at Wisconsin, Washington
University, California at Riverside,
City University of New York, Maryland,
Illinois, Southern Illinois, Memphis
State.
Seminary or Religious
Studies
Students who are
planning on attending a seminary or doing
graduate work in religion often use the
philosophy major as their undergraduate
degree. ASU philosophy graduates have
been accepted at some outstanding religion
programs around the country, including
Princeton Theological Seminary. Courses
in philosophy that are particularly valuable
for this track are ethics and philosophy
of religion courses. |
